What steps are needed to help someone walk out of federal prison after being convicted?

I have a contact that went up against the FDA for some health and wellness supplements he was promoting.  He began the case Pro Se.  Unfortunately the federal court gave him a public defender who was unable to make a case for him, requested more time, the judge refused and proceeded with the hearing.  Clearly he was ill-prepared to handle the situation pro-se.  Of course he lost due to lack of any defense whatsoever due to using a public defender.  He is now incarcerated awaiting sentencing in 6 months! What steps does he need to take to flip this over and walk out of federal prison unscathed?
